"Flyer Doodle Series" 2006

“Flyer Doodle Series”
>> I don’t know if you are aware of the flyers the Israelis were dropping on us throughout last summer’s war. World War II style. They were messages about how this whole war is the fault of Hizuballah. They were hoping to turn the people against Hizuballah. Some of the flyers notified us where they would be bombing (basically everywhere Hizuballah has a presence... basically all over Beirut). But, the one that captured my attention the most was a comical drawing of Assad, Haniyeh and Ahmadinejad sitting in a circle, playing musical instruments, on top of an obscure map of Lebanon. I only realized it was Lebanon because the word Beirut was written on it. In the middle of the circle is a drawing of a snake coming out of a vase. However, the snake’s head is replaced with Nasrallah’s and he is saying: “Can I be of any service?”

I thought it was a very funny and captivating image and wondered how anyone could take this flyer seriously. I thought about the person who drew the image and wondered if it was a child, teenage army reservist, or retired general. The whole thing seemed to be almost a sort of comic relief. It was too absurd to be true. Israel is well known for their expert secret intelligence and Mossad; how could they let something like this slip by!

I was fascinated by the drawings and I found myself getting through the long hot summer by doodling on the fliers. Maya’s mom warned me that there could be poison on the paper, but I took my chances nevertheless.

"Super Star" 2006
acrylic and glitter on wood, 65 x 65 cm

This is a portrait of a man who, overnight, turned into an international media sensation. Regardless of my political opinions, his voice was the one I waited to hear. I find that by painting him, perhaps I can break past the media pop star, and try to get to know the human being who has come to have such an overwhelming presence in my life.
